The Coalition for Music Education in Canada
Research shows that a quality music program can result in multiple benefits for children including:
- Academic Performance
- Healthy Social Development, and
- Quality of Life
Unfortunately, whenever budget cuts have to be made, music programs are often the first to be considered.
Since it was founded in 1992, The Coalition for Music Education in Canada has been dedicated to encouraging and supporting individuals and organizations to advocate for quality music programs as a pillar of a well-rounded education. With this goal in mind, the Coalition focuses on the following key areas:
- Public Awareness
- Resources
- Research
- Community Connectivity
In addition to creating and supplying multiple resources for advocacy, The Coalition for Music Education in Canada has made significant impact on the culture of appreciation and receptivity for music education through “Music Monday,” a national event, now entering it’s 7th year, that resulted in the participation of upwards of 750,000 students, teachers and community members in 2010. The Coalition is also the only organization in Canada conducting national research about the status of music education in our schools. A new study will be released this fall which will be an important tool for advocacy, particularly when communicating with policy makers.
